Harrison Ford Tried to Push Jason Segel Out of a Canoe
Season 2 of Shrinking premiered on Apple TV+ on Wednesday. The show stars Jason Segel as a therapist who—grieving his wife's death—begins to employ unconventional methods on his patients, much to the chagrin of his senior colleague played by Harrison Ford. And apparently the unlikely dynamic between the two characters is not unlike that of their real-life counterparts.
During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week, the host noted that working with Ford can be quite intimidating, which Segel more than agreed with. To that point the 44-year-old recalled filming a scene in which his co-star tried to push him out of a canoe.
"We had a scene, it was one day on a beautiful lake, where he and I were going to be in a canoe together," Segel explained. "And I arrived, and it was a real pinch myself moment, like, I’m gonna be in a canoe with Harrison Ford all day—what a dreamy thing, life has worked out. So then we started filming, and I started doing my acting.
"And then, all of a sudden, I feel the canoe start to shake, and he's trying to capsize me into the water. So I turn around, [and he's like], 'Sorry, kid,'" he continued, imitating Ford's gruff tone. "Then we're doing another part of the scene where I’m standing on the edge of the lake. I look out, doing my acting, and he shoves me towards the water, and I catch myself. I turn and he's like, 'Oh, sorry, kid.'
"So I have ruled out in my mind that this is jealousy. I think we are friends," Segel said, optimistically. For his part, Colbert agreed, comparing it to a kid who punches you on the playground because they have a crush on you.
"Our relationship in real life mirrors our relationship on the show. I desperately want his approval, and he wants to humiliate me," the How I Met Your Mother star added.
When asked if Ford is enjoying himself working on a comedy, Segel said that he thinks he really is, bringing up a moment from filming the first season in which the legendary actor got big laughs from the crew. "They yelled 'cut' and he walked by me and he whispered in my ear, 'I knew I was f--king funny,'" he recalled, laughing.
Then first two episodes of Shrinking are currently streaming, with new episodes released every Wednesday on Apple TV+.
