Sylvester Stallone's New Movie Earns Rare 0% Rating on Rotten Tomatoes
No one can argue that Sylvester Stallone is a legend. As the man who gave us both Rocky and Rambo, he will forever be one of the most beloved action icons of all time. More recently, Stallone’s Tulsa King has been an incredible hit, beloved by new viewers and old Stallone heads alike. But, just like Rocky can’t win every fight, not every single thing Stallone makes is pure gold.
His latest film, Armor has obtained a very rare 0% score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. But is this hilariously low score accurate?
Armor is an action-heist movie and Stallone plays a villainous bank robber attempting to steal the contents of an armored truck, which has been trapped under a bridge. Technically, this is a father-son movie starring Jason Patric and Josh Wiggins, who were just trying to connect during a drive, when tragedy struck.
The fact that Stallone isn’t the father figure in this movie (instead playing a ruthless baddie) could have been a good thing for the film, but instead, it doesn’t seem to be helping the movie at all. We’ve seen Stallone play anti-heroes before, of course; cult classics like Judge Dredd (1995) and Escape Plan (2013) spring to mind.
But, the problem with Armor is that it lacks that self-aware vibe of some Expendables-era Stallone. This isn’t the type of movie that invites the audience to have a good time with an over-the-top-action premise. Instead, the somewhat grounded, and slightly low-key stakes hurt the Stallone-ness of it all. What feels like one action sequence in a different movie has been, somehow, turned into an entire feature. Even the self-serious Rambo: Last Blood (2019) was more watchable than this.
We all love Sly, and can’t wait to see what he does next. But for now, if you’re planning on renting Armor for a late-night guilty pleasure, it’s probably best to pass on this one, and just rewatch Cobra or Copland again.
