New Film Hopes to Redeem The Most Controversial James Bond
If you’re a Bond fan, then you know that there’s a spectrum of Bond flavors. Just like 007 doesn’t only drink dry martinis, the men who have embodied this immortal secret agent have imbued the super-spy with a variety of moods, ranging from dangerous, to suave, to downright grumpy. But if there’s one James Bond who can generally be agreed to be “the funny one” it's Roger Moore. As his good friend David Walliams says in a new documentary, “If he wasn’t so good-looking, they would have let him be a comedian.”
The late, great Roger Moore is the subject of a new starred-studded documentary called From Roger Moore With Love, which will be released on December 15th in the UK. The first trailer for the film has just been made available and it looks like a much-watch for 007 aficionados, and casual movie fans alike.
Exploring the life of Moore, from his early days to his fame on the classic mystery series The Saint, and of course his long tenure as James Bond (7 movies over 12 years), this new documentary looks to be a cocktail of heartfelt stories and little-known revelations. And, even if he wasn’t your favorite James Bond, the truth is, we’re all Roger Moore fans. Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig all brought their own unique swaggers to the character, and yes, Sean Connery was the blueprint. But without Moore’s unforgettable charm, we would have never gotten here – at all.
Although technically older than Sean Connery when he took over the role of James Bond in 1973’s Live and Let Die, Roger Moore will forever be remembered as the man who took the 007 franchise in a lighter, more hyperbolic direction. Sure, Connery’s Bond had an ejector seat in his Aston Martin, but Moore’s Lotus Esprit could also convert into a submarine. For Bond purists of the time, Moore’s take on Bond was a departure, but for those who grew up with his films in the 70s and 80s (or watched endless Bond marathons on TV in the 1990s), Moore is arguably the guy that gave the franchise its staying power.
“We all invent ourselves,” Christopher Walken says of working with Roger Moore on A View to a Kill. And, as the trailer unfurls, one thing becomes clear, the creation of Roger Moore’s persona was perhaps even more complex than the characters he played. And, as fellow Bond actor (and Roger Moore fan) Pierce Brosnan says in the trailer, “A man becomes what he dreams — he dreamt well!”
