Officials Issue Relieving Update After Tsunami Warning on West Coast
Officials announced today that the coasts of Northern California and Oregon were under tsunami warnings following a 7.0-magnitude earthquake roughly 60 miles from Ferndale, CA, in Humboldt County; and then, just as quickly, the warnings were canceled.
Earlier on Thursday, officials declared a tsunami warning in effect from Davenport, CA to the California-Oregon border. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned citizens to “get away from coastal waters,” SFGate reported.
The earthquake struck around 10:44 a.m. on Thursday, reaching a depth of 10 kilometers. No injuries were reported in the quake; but BART, the Bay Area’s transit system, suspended all trains from using the underwater Transbay Tube.

But on Thursday afternoon, officials canceled the tsunami warning and declared that “no tsunami danger presently exists” for the California and Oregon coasts.
“This will be the final U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center message for this region,” the statement concluded.”

Ultimately, the nature of the earthquake (largely slip-strike) dissipated the energy that might have caused problems.

The side to side motion of the earthquake (strike slip) handled most of the slippage, with minimal thrust (up/down).
You need more thrust for a tsunami.
