Ben Affleck Blasts Cancel Culture in Hollywood
Ben Affleck has been a fixture in Hollywood for more than three decades, and throughout that time, he's seen countless changes in the industry and been in several panned films as well as acclaimed classics. When evaluating the state of the industry today, the Air star offered a frank analysis of the landscape.
Affleck delivered his honest thoughts on Hollywood today in a new interview with Deadline. He acknowledged that his career in entertainment can be fleeting as job security isn't guaranteed, even for an A-list star like himself.
"We’re all subject to this sort of insecurity in this business. Whether we’re actors or directors or writers, the phone could stop ringing for us," he said. "I don’t know when this might go away."
The inability to predict his next job is just one part of an entertainment career's fragile nature. In a post-so-called-cancel culture world, Affleck also has to consider what he says publicly on a daily basis on top of other considerations before taking on a job—namely, if he believes the film will do well.
"I’m one errant remark away from being canceled, or I’m one movie bomb away from never working again, and I’ve got a family and so forth. Naturally, people seek to do what’s in their best interest," he said. "And so that’s part of what you have to account for."
Affleck has increasingly gotten into directing and producing in recent years as opposed to being in front of the camera. He made his directorial debut with Gone Baby Gone and his 2012 film Argo won the Oscar for Best Picture. His most recent film he directed and produced as well as starred in, Air, earned two Golden Globe nominations this year.
