The Best Sports City in America Is on the West Coast, Study Finds
It's hardly a secret that Americans love their sports, but some U.S. cities clearly go harder when it comes to the passion they hold for their beloved teams. As such, a new report has identified the best sports cities in America, if you're wondering whether yours makes the cut.
There findings come from the personal finance company WalletHub, which released its 2024's Best Sports Cities Report today. To learn which cities are best for sports from the fan perspective, WalletHub analysts compared 400 cities across more than 50 key metrics related to the five largest sports in the country: football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and hockey.
As the company points out, U.S. sports franchises generate nearly $40 billion in revenue each year, including money from ticket and merchandise sales, media rights, and sponsorship fees. Even with technology, streaming services, and televised sports packages making it possible to watch the game from anywhere, WalletHub realizes that most serious fans prefer to be at the game in-person with the "best seats in the house."
"Sports can cause rivalries between cities, but can also give people a deep appreciation for places other than their hometown," said WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo. "The best sports cities overall tend to be those with the highest-performing, most-popular professional teams, like Los Angeles, Boston, Pittsburgh and New York."
"When you filter by city size, though, there are a ton of amazing local sports scenes to discover. For example, Green Bay, WI, is a midsize city with one of the richest football cultures in America, and Clemson, SC, is a small city with high-level, affordable games across multiple sports at the collegiate level."
