Will Ferrell's New Streaming Comedy Has Shockingly Low Critic Score
Not every movie that Will Ferrell does is automatically great. Case-in-point, most people would never think of Melinda and Melinda (2004) and Zoolander 2 (2016) among Ferrell's greatest achievements, and yet these movies exist and did decently at the time they were released.
Will Ferrell tends to be loved regardless of whether or not all his projects are 100 percent awesome. And, his latest hit movie, which pairs him with Reese Witherspoon might follow in that strange tradition; exceptionally popular, even if it has poor reviews.
The comedy You’re Cordially Invited hit Amazon Prime Video on Jan. 30, and is currently, the number one streaming movie for Prime in the U.S. The movie follows Ferrell and Witherspoon as single parents, who find that their respective kids' weddings have been booked on the exact same day at the exact same venue.
Essentially, the film is a battle between Ferrell and Witherspoon, whose characters in the film have names, though it's unlikely that anyone will actually remember said names. (Remember Ferrell's character's name from Step Brothers? Nope. Neither do we.)
So, despite being a pretty solid, if ridiculously comedic set-up, and being the number one movie on Amazon, You’re Cordially Invited is getting slaughtered in the review department. From casual viewers to professional film critics, there are some savage comments flying about a movie that is mostly being described as meh.
The movie currently holds a 46 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes with critics, and only a 37 percent score with audiences. One of the nicer takedowns from Dana Barbuto at Boston Movie News said: "The setup has potential but dissolves into scattered matrimonial mishaps." Meanwhile, Oliver Jones at the Observer affirmed the generic quality of the movie, saying "...Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell [are] both doing watered-down variations on characters they created in other films."
Is You’re Cordially Invited the worst thing ever? Surely not. But it does seem that this latest movie will just make Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon fans wish for better days.
