Patrick Mahomes' Trainer Says His So-Called 'Dad Bod' Is His Secret Weapon
Patrick Mahomes is proud of his so-called dad bod as the star quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, although he's still certainly in great shape. It turns out his physique might be a significant factor in his success on the field.
In a new interview with The New York Times, Mahomes' trainer Bobby Stroupe opened up about his experience working with the future football legend from when he was in elementary school until now. Even then, Stroupe noticed that Mahomes was a master at understanding momentum and space—specifically, at "forecasting momentum," which involves using his vision and depth perception to determine how fast he's moving compared to a defender next to him.
Mahomes' physical shape is especially helpful in these situations. "I think the problem is you look at him and his body type is not what you would think of," Stroupe said, alluding to the perception that quarterbacks have chiseled torsos.

Pitching instructor Ben Brewster noticed among MLB pitchers that greater body mass led to better throwing performance. That extends to other "throwing athletes" like quarterbacks, and of course, comes in handy when trying to take down other players. "That dad bod, man," Mahomes said after a game-winning tackle back in October.
Mahomes, an actual father of three, had fun with the criticism of his lack of washboard abs last year. "Yoooo why they have to do me like that?!" he wrote on X with the hashtag "#DadBodSZN" after a locker room speech of his went viral. He noted that he is a real dad after all, so the label is appropriate. "Like I got kids!!!!" he said.

Clearly, Mahomes' so-called dad bod has been an asset to him in his career, as he's racked up four Super Bowl appearances and three rings in just a few years with the Chiefs.
The Kansas City Chiefs will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9.
