Liam Neeson, 72, Makes Surprising Career Prediction About Future as Action Star
Liam Neeson made a surprising revelation about the future of his career during a new interview with People about his upcoming action thriller Absolution.
Absolution marks yet another role for Neeson following 2008’s Taken in which the actor must employ a very specific—and often quite violent—set of skills to exact revenge on those who have wronged him. Since Taken’s release over 15 years ago, Neeson has appeared in countless iterations of the theme. But, if Neeson is to be believed, Absolution may be one of the final times we see him kick butt on screen.
“I’m 72—it has to stop at some stage,” Neeson admitted. The star performs his own fight sequences, but his longtime stuntman Mark Vanselow handles the more intricate choreography.
Still, Neeson believes, “You can’t fool audiences. I don’t want Mark to be fighting my fight scenes for me.”
The actor is considering departing the action genre at the end of 2025, but he doesn’t know that for certain. “Maybe the end of next year. I think that's it,” Neeson said.
It remains to be seen whether his projection will come to pass, but Neeson made similar remarks about retiring to Entertainment Tonight back in 2021. “I’m 68 and a half. Sixty-nine this year. There’s a couple more I’m going to do this year. There’s a couple in the pipeline and then I think that will probably be it,” he said. “Well, unless I’m on a Zimmer frame or something.”
Since making that proclamation, Neeson has gone on to make at least another six of his traditional revenge flicks. In addition to Absolution, Neeson has Run All Night 2, a sequel to his 2015 actioner, and chase picture The Mongoose lined up before he ends his action reign.
