Bill Burr Slams Billy Corgan for Revealing They Might Be Related
Back in November, Billy Corgan floated a wild theory that he might be comedian Bill Burr's half brother during an appearance on Howie Mandel's Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast. For his part, Burr has not commented on the apparent coincidence—that is, until Mandel welcomed him on the podcast this week, and made the unfortunate mistake of surprising him with Corgan as a special guest.
Perhaps you can chalk it up to hindsight being 20/20, but suffice to say, Burr was not amused by the surprise. "You're as a--hole," he told Mandel without skipping a beat, as Corgan entered the studio.
The Smashing Pumpkins frontman immediately looked nervous, explaining that Mandel told him that Burr was "totally cool" with him stopping in. "That's what he does," the 56-year-old fumed, asking if the segment could be "edited out."
"Alright, f--k, I'll do it," Burr continued before directly addressing Corgan. "Did you ever think the fact that I never told that story, that you know, maybe you shouldn’t?" he asked. "Do you know how many f--king like emails and crap that I got?"
During his appearance, Corgan had explained that his stepmother suggested that Burr could be his brother due to the fact that his father was a traveling musician and had evidently fathered a number of illegitimate children. He had likewise apparently toured in the Boston area shortly before Burr was born.
"He was a piece of s--t. He had two kids this close together and he gave them the same f--king name? He thinks it's different that he's Billy and I'm Bill, that's how we told the difference," Burr said, seemingly confirming the lineage, adding of Corgan: "It’s not that I don’t like him, it reminds me of all of that s--t."
After Burr conceded that he likes Corgan's music, Mandel interjected to ask if we wanted to play drums with his "brother." "Well the fact that he said he can’t sing, I think, disproves that we’re related," Corgan reasoned. "'Cause I’m not funny, so ... it goes both ways."
"Listen, you’ve done well for yourself. I’m happy for you, you know? But I just would prefer if you didn’t go around telling these f--king stories," Burr continued, laughing. "Like, why did you feel the need to do that?"
In his defense, Corgan said that he had told Mandel the story privately off air, and that he had encouraged him to tell it during his appearance.
"He always does that. He’s bringing us here, not because he’s trying to heal the bulls--t that we went through growing up, he’s here just for the f--king ratings, Burr said of the America’s Got Talent judge, adding that he "still loves" him, "even though you did this."
Burr then turned to Mandel and quipped: "What was supposed to happen? Are we gonna go play catch? We’re both in our fifties!"
After Corgan noted that Mandel set them both up, Burr continued laying into him. "Does YouTube give you f--king award for healing fathers who secretly have two families?" he asked, while Corgan noted that "this is some Dr. Phil s--t you've got going on here."
As the pair formed a united front against Mandel, Burr added, "I think we’re kind of on the same page in thinking you’re kind of a dick right now."
Although Burr admitted that the pair will probably get together and hang out eventually, he noted that "on a podcast" was not what he was envisioning.
"I never thought that when I would finally meet you, that there would be like cameras on, and this f--king a--hole here, who, you know, let's be honest, has always been a bit of a lounge act..." he said trailing off, adding: "Everything is a f--king bit with you."
