NHL Fan Distracts Opposition With Nachos, Clinches Goal
A hockey fan with a strong arm helped the Edmonton Oilers score on their opponents during Tuesday’s game by tossing nachos onto the ice, ESPN reported.
The team’s forward, Cory Perry, was on his way to attempt a goal when someone in the stands tossed a full plate of nachos, cheese and all, onto the ice in front of him. But Perry navigated the roadblock with aplomb, navigating himself around it and nailed one past Washington Forwards goalie Logan Thompson.
"That's a first," Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said following the game. "We just talked about that in the coaches' office. I don't think I've ever seen a nachos-on-the-ice National Hockey League game. Did they save them? Maybe we can bring them into the locker room," he joked.

The nachos’ intrusion initially led to some consternation as to whether or not Perry’s goal was legitimate, but it was ultimately ruled that they didn’t disrupt the flow of the game in any substantive way. “There’s shrapnel on the ice and the Caps are upset about it!” commentator Jack Michaels said while watching a replay. “Yeah, those nachos were already there. And I don’t think Logan Thompson can say, ‘I lost the puck in the nachos.’”
As for Perry, he told reporters after the game that he “didn’t even see” the nachos because he was so “focused on the play.” Thompson took the blame for letting the puck slip past him, but stipulated that the event was remarkably unprecedented. “I’ve never seen that before,” he said after the game.
