Anthony Mackie Details How Chris Evans Revealed Huge 'Captain America' Spoiler
Anthony Mackie didn't know what to expect when Chris Evans led him into his man cave a few years ago.
Mackie, the current titular hero in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World, revealed in a conversation with Fandango how he found out he'd be taking the shield from original star Chris Evans.
"It was a bunch of us at his house—he had this crazy house—sitting there watching a game, shooting the s--t," Anthony said in the video interview. "He goes, 'Have you read the new script?' I said, 'Nah.'"
At the time, Mackie was playing Falcon in the MCU and Evans was inquiring as to whether he had read the screenplay for 2019's Avengers: Endgame, in which Falcon becomes Captain America. Mackie did not see the twist coming.
"Being Black," Mackie said. "I'm like, 'I'mma die, damn. They're getting rid of me, man. I don't even cause no trouble. I stand in the back, like I don't bother nobody.'"
Mackie said Evans took him into his basement, a "man cave of all man caves," and he then got to see the vision.
"He gets the new script," he said. "He goes to like the last 10 pages, and he goes, 'Read it!' So I'm thinking they killed me off… I get to the part and it's like, you know, I'm reading the scene between us, and it goes, 'He hands him the shield.' I'm like, 'So why did you give the shield?' He's like, 'Because you're f--king Captain America.'"
"It was hilarious," he recalled.
