James Cameron Just Revealed a Wild New Clan for 'Avatar 3'
New images have dropped for the long-awaited sequel to 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water.
Avatar creator and director James Cameron will bring audiences back to Pandora at the end of 2025 with the franchise's third installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash. The movie will establish a new tribe of Na'vi and their relationship to the wonders and horrors of Pandora.
Empire has fresh concept images for Fire and Ash, which show the new clans and creatures that will populate the movie. The first photo reveals the Wind Traders who "corral gigantic Pandora creatures to soar among the clouds."
"They're nomadic traders, equivalent to the camel caravans of the Spice Road back in the Middle Ages," Cameron told Empire. "And you know, they're just fun. Like all Na'vi, they live in symbiosis with their creatures."
The second image shows off a new major villain, Varang, the leader of the Ash clan. The art shows the big bad riding a massive winged creature in the Pandora sky. Others flap around him with mountains in the background.
Oona Chaplin will be playing the role of Varang, and Cameron said her work in the film "is so good that I didn't quite appreciate how good her performance is until we got the Wētā animation back."
"Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She's hardened by that," Cameron said. "She will do anything for them, even things that would be considered evil.
"We're trying to evolve beyond the 'all humans are bad, all Na'vi are good' paradigm," the director said.
