Tom Cruise, Ben Stiller Have Talked About a 'Tropic Thunder' Spinoff
Tropic Thunder director and star Ben Stiller dropped an update on a potential spinoff with the movie's infamous Les Grossman character, played with incredible aplomb by Tom Cruise.
The 2008 comedy followed a group of actors filming what they thought was a Vietnam War movie in the jungle, in what turns out to be a very real and hilarious battle.
The rest of the cast included Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, and Matthew McConaughey, with Cruise's performance as an incredibly foul-mouthed and goofily dancing film producer nearly stealing the whole show.
Stiller and his Severance costar Adam Scott recently spoke with Extra about that show's season two premiere, when Tropic Thunder became the topic. Stiller said he wasn't so sure the movie would even get made today. But clarified, "I wouldn't not make it today."
The status of a project starring Cruise's Grossman from the movie also came up, which he said they've talked about "over the years."
"Look, Tom Cruise—one of my favorite human beings, one of our great movie stars of all time—it would be fun, but there is nothing in the works. But we have discussed it in the past," he said.
As recently as 2022, Cruise told ComicBook that doing a Les Grossman movie "could be fun."

Cruise might just be a bit busy to take on the Grossman persona again, as he's got Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning coming in 2025 and a third Top Gun movie in development.
