'Alien: Romulus' Director Shares Bold Idea for Sequel
News about the Alien: Romulus sequel recently got an exciting jump start from director Fede Alvarez, who hinted at the series going in a fresh direction.
In a recent chat with Empire, Alvarez told the publication that in addition to a general update, audiences might also see the return of the characters Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson) from the first film. He said he's currently working on a script with co-writer Rodo Sayagues.
"We're excited about where it can go. We've almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn't seen in a while," he said. "Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters."
The director teased a storyline following Spaeny as Rain in events following the chaos of Romulus.
"I think it'll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we've never been before, and to discover things that you've never seen before," he said.

Alvarez also stressed a sequel should only move forward if it has a worthwhile tale to tell.
"The mistake usually with sequels is to make them because you can, and because of the success of Romulus, we definitely can make a sequel," he said. "But I wouldn't do it unless we have a really good idea for it, something that's worthy of the title."
Alien: Romulus hit theaters on Aug. 14, 2024, in the United States and ended up taking in $105,313,091 at the domestic box office. According to Box Office Mojo, that figure puts it as the second-highest-grossing movie in the Alien franchise.
